Master degree in Environmental Engineering in Earth Observation and Remote Sensing (2000) and PhD in Applied Bioscience and Engineering in 2005, at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven. I worked at the Università degli di Milano, Italy, and have been Team leader and Guest Lecturer of the Geomatics Group at the Department of Land Management at the KUL, combined with a mandate as Science Programme Manager for Environment at the European Science Foundation, Strasbourg, France. I was granted a Postdoctoral Fellowship from the Research Foundation Flanders, and started working at FAO as a Remote sensing expert in the Forestry Department in 2009.
Since 2010, I am working as Team leader of the Remote Sensing and geoportals group in the REDD+ Team, supporting developing countries to set up their national Monitoring Reporting and Verification (MRV) systems in the framework of the REDD+ mechanism under the UNFCCC.
I am an official reviewer for Belgium for LULUCF (Land Use and Land Use change) at the UNFCCC since 2012 and Lead Author for AFOLU in IPCC since 2017. I am elected as a Lead Author for the Sixth Assessment Report of IPCC in WG III.
My main fields of interest and expertise are vegetation monitoring, (Digital) image processing, remote sensing applications, earth observation and environmental modeling for climate impact.
